Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) along with the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) is undertaking the construction of an integrated phase II and III of Az Zour North IWPP Plant project in Al Zour, Kuwait.

The project involves the construction of a 2,700MW power plant and a 120 million gallons per day (MGPD) desalination plant.

The US$4,000 million project includes the following:

Power Plant

1. Installation of steam turbine generator units

2. Installation of boilers and auxiliaries

3. Installation of a distributed control system

4. Installation of flue gas systems

5. Installation of emergency diesel generators

6. Construction of DM water plant

7. Construction of substations

8. Installation of cathodic protection and piping

Desalination Plant

1. Construction of a 120 million gallons a day (MGPD) MSF desalination unit

2. Construction of a chlorination plant

3. Construction of a chemical dosing system

4. Construction of a remineralization plant

5. Construction of a chemical storage facility

6. Construction of a de-aerator

7. Construction of surge vessels

8. Construction of a potable water storage tank

9. Installation of a seawater intake pumping station

10. Installation of auxiliary boilers

11. Installation of a town water pumping station

Acwa Power and Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) have signed a letter of agreement with the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects Authority (Kapp) and Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy to develop the project. Under a 25-year offtake agreement, the Acwa Power-led consortium will design, finance, build, operate, maintain, and transfer the plant and its associated facilities under a build, operate, and transfer model. The main contract tender has been referred by the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) to the State Audit Bureau (SAB) for review, audit and approval.

Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy (MEWRE), through the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (Kapp), opened the financial envelopes submitted for the contract to develop and operate the project by the lone bidder, the Acwa Power-GIC team. Also, the Acwa Power-GIC team is understood to have partnered with Shandong Tiejun Electric Power Company (Sepco 3) in its bid to develop the project. (Source: MEED)

Final clarification meetings are underway for the contract to develop the project. After the clarifications wrap up, the process will move to an additional approval process before the contract is finally awarded to the Acwa Power-GIC team and the final approval is expected to take place quickly.
