Emirates Water & Electricity Company (EWEC) and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) are undertaking the construction of a solar independent power project (IPP) and 19GWh battery energy storage system in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Once completed, the project will be the world’s largest round-the-clock combined solar power and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), delivering reliable renewable energy 24 hours a day.

The project aims to provide round-the-clock (RTC) power between April and October of every year. It will also enable the delivery of up to 1GW of round-the-clock (RTC) solar energy.

The US$6,000 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a 5200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant

2. Installation of solar panels of PV modules

3. Construction of control rooms

4. Installation of transformers

5. Installation of generators

6. Installation of TENER technology battery energy storage system with a capacity of 19GWh

7. Installation of storage devices

8. Laying of transmission lines

Larsen & Toubro and Power China have been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Jinko Solar and JA Solar will supply solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Limited (CATL) will supply the battery energy storage system (BESS). (Source: MEED)

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) is in talks with a list of utility developers, investors, and contractors interested in codeveloping and co-investing in the project. Masdar has shortlisted potential partners, including some of the most recognized utility developers and investors, such as China’s Silk Road Fund, and could finalize the deal or deals over the coming weeks.
