Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) is undertaking the construction of a seawater reverse osmosis plant at Al Hamriyah, Sharjah, the UAE.

The SWRO plant will be the first independent water project (IWP) in Sharjah.

The project aims to meet the increasing demand for potable water in the region.

The plant will generate approximately 272,000 cm/d of desalinated water by the second quarter of 2027 and after the completion, the plant will generate 410,000 cm/d of desalinated water by the third quarter of 2028.

The US$682 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of a seawater reverse osmosis plant with a capacity to produce 90 MIGD (410,000 cm/d)

2. Construction of control rooms

3. Construction of storage tanks

4. Construction of seawater intake pumping station

5. Laying of pipelines

6. Construction of associated facilities

The water purchase agreement has been signed and ACWA Power has been appointed as the developer on the project while we are in the process of identifying the main contractor. Construction works are expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2028. (Source: MEED)
