Emirates Water & Electricity Company (Ewec) in partnership with Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre (Tadweer) is planning to undertake the development of a waste-to-energy project, developed under the independent power producer (IPP) model in Abu Dhabi, the UAE.

The plant is expected to reduce carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by up to 1.1 million tonnes a year, equivalent to removing more than 240,000 cars from the road.

The US$600 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of waste to energy plant (600,000 to 900,000 tonnes of waste per year to power 52,500 UAE households)

2. Installation of incineration systems

3. Installation of a mechanical-biological treatment unit

4. Construction of a water drainage system

5. Installation of fire protection

6. Installation of boiler internals

7. Associated facilities

Parties prequalified as consortium members include: FAS Energy, Gulf Investment Corporation, Ramky Enviro Engineers, Shikun & Binul. Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) has signed a consultancy agreement with KEO International Consultants to conduct a feasibility study for extracting greenhouse gases from the Al Dhafra landfill and converting them into environmentally-friendly energy.
