Societe Algerienne des Energies Renouvelables Spa (SHAEMS) a subsidiary of Sonelgaz and Sonatrach is planning to develop a renewable energy program of 22,000 MW in Algeria.

Algeria is set to commence the development of its Renewable Energy program from 2011 to 2030. The program will include energy sources like solar photovoltaic, wind power, solar energy, biomass energy, cogeneration and geothermal. The market needs of Algeria over a period of 15 years are 22 GW and 4500 MW is expected to be realized before 2020. Solar PV will form a large part of this program, closely followed by wind power. Once, this program is realized by 2030, about 27% of its energy production through renewable sources. The program consists of installing up to 22,000 MW of power generating capacity from renewable sources between 2011 and 2030, of which 12,000 MW will be intended to meet the domestic electricity demand and 10,000 MW for export. In the course of the program about 60 solar photovoltaic and concentrating solar power plants, wind farms, as well as hybrid power plants, shall be installed.

The US$34,000 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of solar 13,575MW photovoltaic

2. Construction of 5,010MW wind power

3. Construction of 2,000MW solar energy

4. Construction of 1,000MW biomass

5. Construction of 400 MW cogeneration

6. Construction of 15 MW geothermal
