The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is planning a gas processing and petrochemical complex (GPC), covering an area of approximately 4,500ha, which will be located near the Sangachal terminal, along the boundaries of the Absheron and Garadagh Districts, approximately 60km south of Baku.

The new complex is expected to replace the existing processing facilities in Baku and Sumgait. The products from the complex will primarily meet the domestic demands and the excess will be exported.

The US$7000 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of the petrochemical plant

2. Installation of a steam cracker

a. Ethylene unit (610,000 tpa)

b. Propylene unit (120,000 tpa)

3. Construction of associated facilities

Univation has been appointed as the technology provider to deliver UNIPOL PE process technology which will enable the plant to shift between HDPE to LLDPE based on customer needs. Univationwill also deliver XCAT metallocene PE technology.
