Qatar Railways Co. (QRAIL) in assistance with DB International is undertaking the Rail Integrated Network project in Qatar.

The project aims for long-distance freight and high-speed passenger rail lines, as well as a metro network in Doha and a light rail system in Lusail. It also aims to connect Qatar’s railway with the planned GCC-wide rail network.

Earlier, plans for the two rail lines seem to have broken the project into three phases. The first phase would involve a 195 km freight line linking Port Mesaieed to Ras Laffan, and eventually linking into Saudi Arabia through the planned GCC-wide network. Phase 2 would involve the construction of a 150 km high-speed connection to Bahrain. Phase 3 would see the development of a 165 km passenger and freight national network linking Dukhan to Al-Shamal and Doha. Along with which there were plans for a light rail network in the Lusail City development in North Doha.

The US$45850 million project includes the following::

1. Doha Metro

a. Red Line: The total length of this line would be 98.5 km. It is divided into two parts – Red line North and Red Line South. The 55.7 km red line north will extend from Msheireb station to Al Khor North station. The 42.8 km red line south will extend from NDIA / Messaieed station to Msheireb station totaling.

b. Green Line: The 65.3 km line would run between the Industry Area-South station and Al Rayyan Stadium / Al Rayyan North / Umm Slal Stadium station

c. Gold Line: The 30.6 km line would run between the Airport City North station and Al Rayyan South / Salwa / Industrial Area station

d. Blue Line: The 17.5 km line would run between the Airport City North station and the West Bay Central station

2. Passenger & Freight Rail

Phase 1: Will extend from Qatar to Saudi Arabia (135 km)

Phase 2: Will extend within Qatar (173 km)

Phase 3: Will extend from Qatar to Bahrain (92 km)

Bids were submitted in Q4 2011. With Qatar successfully winning the bid for 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar Railways Development Company has unveiled plans to prioritise 14 packages covering Doha Metro as Phase 1 of the Qatar Integrated Railway Project (QIRP). Civil works will be tendered in nine packages while rolling stock, systems and preparatory works would cover the remaining five packages. Tenders for the civil works packages are expected to be issued in the last quarter of 2011.
