Multiple factors drive demand and generation capacity increases, which create new challenges in terms of grid stability, carbon emissions and cost among others.
As of 2023, total installed capacity stood at more than 462GW. Saudi Arabia will retain the highest generation capacity, in line with renewable expansion and modernising conventional fleet, by 2030.
Renewable energy is expected to meet most of the peak demand capacity in many countries, with gas-generation capacity expansion designed to improve grid flexibility or bolster the system during increased demand.
Saudi Arabia accounts for roughly $51bn or 22 per cent of total planned and unawarded projects in the Mena region ($232bn). Solar and wind account for over $140bn (61%) and conventional schemes account for $55bn (24%).
Clients plan to integrate battery energy storage systems to stabilise their electricity systems and address spinning reserve
requirements as RE capacity expands.
