Saudi Aramco and Total (SATORP) are planning to build a mixed-feed cracker in Jubail at a site adjacent to Aramco and Dow Chemical's petrochemicals plant within the industrial city. The project is also known as the Amiral project comprises ethylene complex and producing linear alpha-olefins, poly-alpha-olefins, and elastomers.

The complex will comprise a world-size mixed-feed steam cracker (50% ethane and refinery off-gas) with a capacity of 1.5 million tons per year of ethylene and related high-added-value petrochemical units. The feedstock would partially come from SATORP, the existing Aramco-Total joint refining venture, and from Sadara, a joint venture between Aramco and Dow Chemical, also in Jubail. The project will represent an investment of around US$5 billion and The cracker will feed other petrochemical and speciality chemical plants representing an overall amount of US$4 billion investment by third-party investors. Hence in total $9 billion will be invested by the client.

Saudi Aramco Total Refining & Petrochemical Company (Satorp) has entered into a series of wide-ranging discussions with Sadara Chemical Company regarding the proposed phase two expansion of the Satorp refinery. The technical consultation meetings taken place between Total, Dow and Aramco have been successful and a plan for the potential scope of the Satorp phase two has been agreed subject to a full feasibility study, quoted in MEED article dtd June 21, 2012.

The proposed project is an expansion and is considered to be the second phase of the Jubail Refining & Petrochemical Company's Jubail Export Refinery. The project is still in a very initial stage and no decision has yet been made. A detailed study will be undertaken after which a decision will be taken whether to proceed with the second phase. Any chemicals produced in a phase two will have to complement the offtake from the Sadara Chemical Company complex being built by Saudi Aramco and the Dow Chemical. (30/11/2011)
