National Authority for Tunnels (NAT), is constructing a metro network project in the city of Cairo.

This one of the major metro/tram projects of the region.

The US$30,000 million project includes the following:

Phase 1

1. Construction of 4.3km line which will run from Attaba Station to Abbassia Station.

2. Construction of 5 underground stations.

Phase 2

1. Construction of 7.7km line which will run from Abbassia Station to Haroun Station

2. Construction of 4 underground stations

Phase 3A

1. Construction of 4km line which will run from Attaba Station to Kit Kat Station in the west of the city

2. Construction of 4 underground stations

Phase 3B

1. Construction of 7km line which will run from Kit Kat Station to Rod el-Farag in the north of Cairo

2. Construction of 6 underground stations

Phase 3C

1. Construction of 7km line which will run from Kit Kat Station to the junction of Line 2 at Cairo University Stations in the south

Phase 4

1. Construction of 15.8km line from Haroun Heliopolis to Cairo International Airport.

1. Construction of rail from Al Malek Al Saleh Station to the borders of 6th of October

Cairo Metro Network Line 3: Construction works are ongoing as per the schedule on Phase 3: Electromechanical Works project and Siemens Energy is providing the complete electrification package which includes substation automation system, gas-insulated switchgear, and transformers of 66/20kv. Construction works are ongoing on Phase 4: Package 4B and the project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2020. Signal installation works are ongoing on Phase 4: Package 4B: Signalling Systems and the project is expected to be completed by the end of June 2020.

Modernize line 2 of Cairo metro from Shubra to Mounib is in the design stage and expected to be completed by March 2019. The client is looking for the investor for the development of the sixth metro line.

NAT signed an agreement worth US$282 million with South Korea for the procurement and manufacturing of 32 air-conditioned trains for Cairo metro line 3 phase 3 and phase 4. The purchase from Hyundai Rotem will be financed through a loan from South Korea at an interest rate of 0.1%, to be repaid over 33 years following a 20-year grace period.

For Cairo Metro Network: Line 2: Extension to Qalyoub City, Systra is appointed as Consultant with US$2.8 million of contract value. Construction works for IV A has progressed upto 90%, civil works and finishes by 93%, railway works by 90%, electromechanical works by 81%, communications, signalling and control works by 66%.

NAT - Cairo Metro Network: Line 3 - Phase 3 Hyundai Rotem has been awarded a $377.5m contract for the supply of 256 metro cars for the project. The contract will also include eight-year maintenance for the metro cars. The first delivery of metro cars is expected in 2018. Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) and export financing by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and Export-Import Bank of Korea will finance this contract.

Cairo Metro Network: Line 4 - The client has signed an official agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to appoint the joint venture of Arab Consulting Engineers, EHAF Consulting Engineers, Nippon Koei, Nippon Civic and Oriental Consultants to carry out supervision consultancy services for Phase 1 of Line 4.

Line 3 - Phase 4 - Package 4B: A formal contract has been signed appointing Orascom Construction / Arab Contractors JV as the main contractor for the project. The share of Orascom in the contract is US$333m(EUR 295m).

Line 3 - Phase 3 - El-Thawra Line Civil Work: Vinci / Bouygues Travaux Publics / The Arab Contractors / Orascom Construction JV has won the main contract on the project and Orascom Construction's share of the contract value is US$427m out of the total US$1.2bn for the project.

The joint venture of Colas Rail and Alstom has been awarded a contract to undertake the renovation of track, switches and crossings, the construction of new track, the replacement of overhead lines as well as the widening of platforms at the New El-Marg station (in Line One from the El-Marg to New El-Marg station) , the power supply (track current), and the construction of all associated facilities. The project is expected to be completed by Q2 2018.

The phase 4 project in Line 3 has been revived. The formal agreement has been signed with Vinci for phase 4 package 4A with duration of 34 month. Also the client has confirmed the consortium of Orascom and Arab Contractor will be the main contractor for phase 4 package 4B.
