Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) is undertaking the construction of a water desalination plant in Shuaibah, Saudi Arabia.

The project involves the redevelopment of a thermal desalination facility into a greenfield SWRO desalination plant which is partially energized by solar photovoltaic (PV).

This plant will be known as the Shuaibah 3 IWP.

The project aims to establish the world’s largest reverse osmosis desalination facility in Shuaibah, located 110 km south of Jeddah.

This will lower the impact of 45 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and 22 million barrels of light crude oil annually.

The US$800 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of reverse osmosis desalination plant with a capacity of 600,000 m3/d

2. Construction of seawater intake system

3. Installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels

4. Construction of storage tanks

5. Installation of pressure ex-changers

6. Installation of membranes

7. Installation of pumps

8. Associated facilities

Doosan Enerbility has been appointed as the EPC contractor. The construction works are expected to commence in September 2022 and the completion is scheduled in May 2025.

The client has signed the water purchase agreement (WPA) for a period of 25 years with the consortium of ACWA Power and Water & Electricity Holding Company (Badeel) at a value of US $800 million. The project completion is expected by Q2 2025.
