Saudi Power Procurement Company(SPPC) is planning to introduce renewable energy projects. To meet the required demand, REPDO recommends the introduction of renewable and nuclear energy gradually such that in 2040. 50% of all electricity generated will be from non-fossil fuels.

The program is designed to provide the base load demand in the night-time during winter, it will be met by geothermal and waste-to-energy plant and the photo voltaic energy will meet the total daytime demand year round. Concentrated solar power will meet the maximum demand difference between photo voltaic and base load technologies; and hydrocarbons will meet the remaining demand.

The Renewable Energy Programme will be developed with a capacity of 13,000MW (13 GW).

The US$1,601 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of solar power plants (1200MW)

2. Construction of wind power plants

3. Construction of waste to energy facilities

4. Construction of geothermal plants

5. Associated works
